Apokayan (Apoh Kayan, high plains of the Kayan) is the name for the area around the upper stream of the Kayan. The region is cut off from the downstream part of the river because of the many impassable rapids. Due to the remote position, just like the upper Mahakam, it took a long time before the first western influences arrived. The fundamentalist mission has been activating for over 70 years, by pushing away most part of the traditional Dayak culture. There is no commercial wood chop in the Apokayan region due to the inevitable transport problem. For the bird lovers, riverside of the Kayan can be a recommended place to visit, as well as sighting plenty of wild pigs, the red muntjac or barking deer, and even clouded leopard showing up occasionally.

Tour Itenary :

Day 01  BALIKPAPAN SAMARINDA

Meet at airport and directly transfer to Samarinda for overnight on hotel. Free at your own leisure.

Day 02  SAMARINDA – LONG APUNG – LONG URO

After breakfast at hotel, we will drive to Temindung airport for flying about 1 hour 30 minutes to reach Long Apung. The flight using CASSA 212 aircraft occupies for 22 passengers with two propellers on both wings make little bit noisy. Using ear plugs is recommended. Afterwards, we will cruise up the Kayan River to Long Uro by motorized boat. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight on Kenyah Dayak Traditional Longhouse. (B,L,D)

Day 03  LONG URO – LIDUNG PAYAU – SUNGAI BARANG

After breakfast, we will be trekking to Sungai Barang passing the Lidung Payau to explore the Kenyah Dayak daily life. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight on local house. (B,L,D)

Day 04  SUNGAI BARANG – LONG APUNG

After breakfast, we will have a sightseeing at the village, and then continue our trip by trekking back to Long Apung. Lunch will be served en route, dinner and overnight on local house. (B,L,D)

Day 05  LONG APUNG SAMARINDA

After breakfast, proceed to Long Apung airport by 30 minutes soft trekking to join the flight to Samarinda for overnight on hotel. Lunch and dinner will be served en route and overnight on hotel. (B,L)

Day 06  SAMARINDA – DEPARTURE

Breakfast at hotel and free at own leisure till the proper time for transferring to airport for your next destination. (B)
